May On The Allotment Leave a comment

May is an exciting time at the allotment with early crops now making fast growth in the increasing daylight and warmth, and others ready to plant out towards the middle of the month. Pickings in the last month have been radish, early rocket, lettuce (for leaves – Grenoble rouge, little gem and Xanadu) and baby salad spinach (butterflay) as well as some overwintered rocket, endive, Grenoble rouge lettuce and cooking spinach (medania).

In the greenhouse ready to be planted shortly are sweetcorn (tramunt), squashes (butternut Waltham, red kuri, crown prince) and courgettes (serafina and atena). Runner beans and French beans will be sown indoors on the 10th and this week I will sow autumn cabbage for hearts. I already have seedlings from dwarf kale and cavolonero to prick out plus a few red cabbage (granat).
